Jahrhunderts kommt es in Europa zu einem Bruch mit den Werten und Idealen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Das traditionelle Bild eines individuellen Menschen als einer Konstante in der Welt, als permanent in der Geschichte, bricht zusammen und mit ihm alle auf diesen Menschen ausgerichteten Wertvorstellungen.1 Stattdessen treten Fragen der menschlichen Existenz in den Mittelpunkt, welche Existenzphilosophen wie Sartre oder Camus - um die wichtigsten Vertreter des franzosischen Existenzialismus zu nennen - verschiedenartig zu beantworten versuchen. Auch der oft als Fruhexistenzialist bezeichnete Andre Malraux, seinerseits Schriftsteller und Politiker, beschaftigte sich in seinen Werken haufig mit Fragen zur Position des Menschen in der Welt und in der Geschichte sowie zum Sinn der menschlichen Existenz im Hinblick auf den alles beendenden Tod des Menschen. Schlusselbegriffe sind dabei absurdite, mort und solitude. Diese machen - grob gesagt - die Lage des Menschen aus, welche als condition humaine bezeichnet wird und mit der der Mensch unerbittlich zu kampfen hat. Doch was genau steckt nach Malraux hinter diesen theoretisch eigentlich kaum fassbaren Gedanken und wie werden sie in seinen Werken umgesetzt, um sie fur den Leser auch fuhlbar zu machen? Die vorliegende Arbeit mochte versuchen, eine Antwort auf diese Fragen zu finden. Zu diesem Zweck sollen die Begriffe mort, absurdite und solitude erst einmal jeder fur sich untersucht werden, um einen allgemeinen Uberblick uber die Denkweise Malraux' zu gewinnen.
